COmmunity Outreach

Assisting cooperative activities with local communities in Hiroshima Prefecture, we help schools design cultural programs and prepare students for study trips that involve international travel.

High Schools

Hiroshima International School
Kenhiro High School
Hiroshima Jogakuin High School
Kake “Model” High School

Teachers of the Global Education Course cooperate with Super Global High Schools (SGH), Hiroshima International School and other schools with international programs in Hiroshima Prefecture. We advise teachers and students in planning study trips abroad.

In a partnership program with Hiroshima Prefectural “Kenhiro” Junior / Senior High School, we instructed students individually on how to adapt their goals and methods for qualitative fieldwork research in Australia using efficient language and open-ended questionnaires. Based on observations and participation in classes and school events of the Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior / Senior High School, we have assisted student learning related to multicultural coexistence and peace-building programs.

Specializing in Japanese culture and religion, our lecturer, Dr. Delakorda Kawashima, has been supporting teachers preparing for lectures on Japanese culture at schools overseas and in culture teaching and learning through an intercultural exchange, such as the donning of traditional Japanese clothing at Mihara Junior High School (depicted in the photo above), which is attached to Hiroshima University.

In other outreach activities, Dr. Delakorda Kawashima has given lectures on popular religiosity and pilgrimage in Japan at Hiroshima International School, and she is cooperating this year as a lecturer in Hiroshima Prefecture's school program known as the ‘Intercultural Understanding Promotion Program’ at Hiroshima Prefectural Kake High School.

Study Abroad Support

Our faculty assist in a special study abroad program feature of the Globally-Minded Teacher Training Program that gives program students the opportunity to take classes at the English Language Center of Michigan State University in the United States of America. Please see the promotional video for more details.

We also provide instructional support for the university-wide study abroad programs linked below.

Students who participate in the Globally Minded Teacher Training Program here in the School of Education have the rare opportunity to spend four months living and studying abroad at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. Students in this program will not only study English through an intensive English course but my also participate in regular classes at the university, all while living in the furnished dormitories provided to all students at the university.

Some instructors in the Global Education Course are also involved in the Hiroshima University START/START+ programs. Students who are accepted to these programs spend two weeks abroad learning English in intensive morning courses while learning about the local and national culture through field experiences in the afternoons. START/START+ programs are available for 10 countries and depending on the country may include primary/secondary school visits, home stay opportunities, and visits to culturally significant sites.

Students in Education may also participate in a semester or yearlong study abroad program designed around not only the on-site acquisition of a foreign language, but also of experiences in that foreign culture and of knowledge in their particular field of study. Students in this program will not only gain university credit for their time abroad but may also participate in research instruction.
